Writing from the Garden

Your classroom garden loans itself to writing so much!

The obvious first bit of writing from the garden is your student garden journals. Your students will write in these regularly, drawing and keeping track of the growth of your garden. But there is so much more writing that can be done.

Here are some suggestions, let me know if you think of more!

How to Plant a Garden. I have done this as a shared write with grade 2 students. We started with how to plant and continued writing “how-to” garden guides until we had a gardening resource book that the we printed for the children to take home at the end of the school year. The other titles in this book were “How to Take Care of Your Garden” and “Problems in Your Garden”.

Recipe Book. We created a class recipe book based on the foods we made in our classroom.

Stories.  One of my students wrote a short story about elves that lived in the garden and came out at night to take care of the plants. Your only limit is your imagination!

Poetry. Nature features in a lot of poetry. I have read poetry books with my students when teaching a poetry unit and many have chosen to write about the garden in their poems.
